Budget Buys: Jules Pansu Pillows

June 17th, 2010

After visiting this year’s gift show, it’s apparent that ikat patterns are here to stay. Just as animal print’s become a seasonal staple in the fashion world, it appears that ikat variations and ethnic repeats are following a parallel road. Everyone knows the beauty that is the John Robshaw collection, however it’s important to note other designers making their mark around the globe. Today’s feature highlights Jules Pansu’s collection. Pansu’s a Parisian design house with roots dating back to 1878. In 1994, a home collection was launched and the line’s been leading the way in innovative design ever since. Today a wide variety of products are on sale via Gilt Groupe. Check it out!

Homegoods: Missoni Sample Sale

May 6th, 2010

It’s rather exciting when brands tastefully execute graphic pattern trends. Be it pixelated pillows or outlined animal print plates, Missoni Home always seems to get it right, remaining at the forefront of creative home accessory production. After seeing so many half hazard attempts at the digital trend, it’s refreshing to see the correct fusion of materials, creative direction and finish, and it’s particularly refreshing to see a brand push trends that aren’t necessarily ‘market-safe.’ Tomorrow, a vast array of their home goods will be for sale on Gilt Groupe. Even if you don’t buy, it’s worth perusing- just for inspiration’s sake.

Trend: Tribalizing Tanagrams

March 25th, 2010

When was the last time you thought to yourself, bold and simple’s the way to go? Perhaps yesterday? Dusen Dusen, a new label by Brooklyn designer, Ellen Van Dusen was featured in a Daily Candy mail out this week, adding fuel to a quickly growing fire that graphic designers are embracing triangles, squares and circles again.

Whether the patterns are primal and bold, as exhibited by Dusen Dusen and Suki Cheema, or being used to manipulate text, as evident by Urban Outfitter‘s most recent logo design, one thing’s for sure, mismatched shapes aren’t going away anytime soon. Suki Cheema’s recently launched home collection was one of the best displays at this year’s gift show, and a breath of fresh air from endless aisles of Tory Burch-like geometrics. Using just a grid [...]

Artist Profile: Aimée Wilder

April 22nd, 2009

Aimée Wilder is a pattern designer to watch.  Her prints can be found throughout the homegoods and fashion worlds, adorning pillows, walls, diaper bags and most recently, footwear.  Each of Wilder’s repeats are beautifully sophisticated with commercial appeal that raises the mass market ante.  Applying a refined color palette, Wilder veers away from sugary pastels that are category specific.  As a native New Yorker, Wilder spent her school holidays exploring fashion showrooms where both of her parents worked, soaking in trends and textiles, laying a foundation that would later influence her budding career.  Keep note of Wilder’s work, as we’re certain only good things will come from this Brooklyn wunderkind.

Home: Insect Kingdoms in Paris

January 26th, 2009

If you pay attention, you’ll almost always notice art imitating life and vice versa. I find this most exciting when unexpected trends weave their way through a city I am unaccustomed to. This was the case on a recent trip to Paris. While exploring the Marais, I stumbled across the most beautiful collection of hand painted silk pillows. The beetle toss was a high-end approach to playful décor. This beetle theme consistently reappeared in various stores – most interestingly as a woven monogram at Printemps. Later on in the day, on a more guided stroll through the Museum National d’Histoire Naturelle, I stumbled upon a beautiful collection of preserved butterflies. The color, composition and collection were impeccable. A commercial version of this natural wonder is translated well [...]
