Background:
The New York Public Library is seeking a talented, new media-savvy, self-motivated graphic designer to work with its award-winning Communications and Marketing department.
This is a rare opportunity for the right individual to contribute to the Library’s evolution into an information leader for the digital age. The New Media designer will help create online exhibition sites and other microsites for NYPL.org, work with leading developers, and in general utilize design to bridge the curatorial and technical arenas. This is a long term temporary position that may lead to a permanent role.
Responsibilities:
This designer will gain experience in portfolio-building multimedia content creation while promoting the NYPL mission to inspire lifelong learning, advance knowledge, and strengthen our communities. S/he will collaborate closely with and learn how design informs, and is informed by, the work of colleagues in marketing, publications, development, education and exhibitions, editorial, and more.
Candidates must present an online and print design portfolio. Experience working on projects within the app/device space is a definite plus. In addition to a very sharp eye that understands the visual grammar of communications, we are looking for typography skill, and someone adept at working with imagery. Keen attention to detail and the ability to work on tight deadlines with creative problem-solving and quick turnaround required.
New media design is the strong focus, but the work runs the gamut from print, electronic/web, websites and mini-sites, social media, and physical and online exhibitions.
Requirements:
- Knowledge of graphic design, color, and typography
- Advanced skills across the Adobe CS suite
- Strong proficiency in and creative utilization of HTML and Dreamweaver
- Strong proficiency in and creative utilization of Flash
- Understanding of and familiarity working with CMS (Content Management Systems)
- Mobile, iOS device experience a plus
- Familiarity with Drupal a plus
- Knowledge of and fluency in discussing and examining latest design/technology trends
- Exceptional organizational skills
- Ability to work independently, and as part of a cross-functional team
