At my first job out of college, I worked as a pattern designer for women’s and children’s footwear. I think I must have churned out hundreds of patterns a year, and of that total, a good majority of those were filled with animals and insects . Kids love these little guys, as do parents, so you can imagine my delight when I stumbled upon Wee Gallery’s sample sale on One Kings Lane today. Surya Sajnani’s lino cut style is very trend forward and quite reminiscent of Hugo Guinness and Perla Anne’s illustrations. The cards are half off, and perfect for framing or for just letting someone know they’re special.

I spent some time walking round the meat packing district today while waiting for my laptop to be maintenanced at the 14th St. Apple Store. Though I’ve seen D*Face’s mural close to a thousand times, it’s relevancy was elevated after noticing Generra’s storefront. Black and white blocks stacked together comprised of Flora and Fauna were a complete parallel to D*Face’s baseline concept. Both compositions are beautifully designed, interesting to dissect and provide social and political commentary of our current global climate. Whichever brand of culture you choose to identify with- be it historical, branded or generic, these geometric “quilts” are a thoughtful reflection of current creative styles, not to mention an interesting window into a now popularized counter-culture.

Background:
We are a strategy and design firm dedicated to brand-driven innovation. By becoming the conduit between the world and the brand, we position brands for growth and develop an innovation path for companies to achieve their ambitions.

Whether it’s reestablishing a brand’s relevance, designing consumer experiences or creating new products and services from scratch, we put the brand at the center of all strategic and creative development.

Founded in 2000, Redscout’s team brings together a cross section of 40 strategists, designers and innovators in New York and San Francisco, but we practice all over the world.

Services:

• Brand creation

• Brand Strategy

• Product Innovation and design

• Consumer Insight Development

• Design Strategy

• Concept Development & Visualization

Within the context of upstream innovation, design at Redscout has two primary objectives: bringing Redscout’s strategic thinking to life and extending the impact of that thinking by seeing the vision through to market.

Responsibilities:
We are looking for a Product Designer with deep visualization skills and a broad sense of user experience design. That is, you are equally adept in creating designs at a high level of refinement, and detail, as you are in using design thinking to conceive the manner in which a consumer experiences a brand across multiple touchpoints, including environments, services and communications.

Your primary role will be to give shape to ideas as they move from strategy to two and three dimensions. As such, you are conversant in working with strategic teams (incorporating consumer research, looking at market analyses, assessing brand fit, etc.), arriving at design principles and framing specific problem statements to catalyze concept generation. You are recognized as being a spark to brainstorming, whether as facilitator or participant, and apply as much rigor to evaluating ideas as generating them.

Finally, you possess a rich, and flexible, design toolkit to visualize your thinking in order to tell the story of a new consumer experience in compelling fashion – whether through sketch, rendering, models, storyboards or animation/video.

Given Redscout’s role in upstream innovation, as well as our diverse client base, you will gain exposure to many facets of design, including structural packaging, consumer products, in-store, environments and service design. Deliverables range from creating initial brand “visions” to communicate the consumer experience to key stakeholders, and for testing purposes, to realizing selected ideas for hand-off to downstream manufacturing.

Requirements:
- 3-5 years relevant professional experience in categories such as consumer products, structural packaging, housewares and environments

- An outstanding design portfolio showing strong conceptual thinking and a refined aesthetic sense

- Desire to engage in design thinking in the upstream, conceptual stages of the innovation process

- Willingness to stretch your design skills beyond “things”

- A balance of right-brain/left-brain, creative/analytical thinking so that ideas are inspirational and emotional, as well as grounded in strategy and function

- The means to communicate your ideas, both visually and verbally

- CAD skills

- A good hand for sketching

- The social dexterity to thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment

- That creative spark

To Apply for this position:
Apply online: talent@redscout.com

Please send:

- Cover letter, resume and on-line or pdf portfolio (5MB limit)

- Case studies, from hand sketches through completed project, are encouraged
