PATTERN PULP

Los Angeles: All Creatures Great and Small

Event Date: 13 - 11, 2011

Jennifer Angus has a talent for creating patterns, but her creations, when viewed from afar, aren’t what you’d expect. Rather than making intricate 2D wallpaper, there’s about 3,500 vivid insects pinned directly to the wall in colors ranging from electric blue, emerald green, pink, purple and red in kaleidoscopic patterns.

The textile design professor and artist recently combined her passion for patterns and textiles with a newfound fascination for the insect after being inspired by the Karen tribe’s uniform in Thailand’s Golden Triangle. Using no endangered species, Angus’ distinctive repeats are created without dye and by destroying no natural resources. For her, pattern is associated more with meaning than decoration. Her works call to mind themes of death, cultural association and ideas about collection. For more info, click here.
