Meet the Newest Member of the Team!
I’m very excited to introduce the newest member of the Pattern Pulp team. I’ll let you in on a little secret- I’ve been trying to get Valerie Gnaedig to contribute for over a year now and she’s finally given in to my badgering!
Gnaedig is a German-born, Brooklyn-based graphic designer with a background in digital, motion, and book design. She’s currently a Senior Designer at Big Spaceship, where she spends her days crafting websites and apps for mobile phones and tablets.
She recently co-designed a series of brass hardware, her first foray into product design; one of the pieces, a set of triangular-headed nails, is now available at select boutique retailers in New York and San Francisco. Valerie spends her free time sprucing up her new apartment; in one recent spree, she re-upholstered two footstools. Her weekly PP [...]

Legal: Trademarks 101
Most creative professionals and designers encounter trademarks more often than they realize. Despite this fact, it is surprising that many don’t know what a trademark is or why trademarks are important. The purpose of this column is to introduce you to trademarks, provide a few tips for how to select and protect your trademarks, and clarify several misconceptions about trademarks that may help you avoid some common mistakes. Let’s get started…
A trademark can be any word, phrase, slogan, name, symbol, logo, design, or combination of those elements that is used to identify and distinguish one’s goods or services. The most basic description of a trademark is that it is a product’s brand name. A trademark is different than a trade name, which is the name that a business trades under for commercial purposes. A business’ trademark and trade name can be [...]
So, What’s Going on Here?
Good question!
I haven’t started competing blogs with the same name if that’s what you’re wondering…
So I take a lot of pictures, we all do. I’ve needed a faster, off-the-cuff solution for some time now, a place to store half-baked ideas and imagery in progress.
I’ve always loved Tumblr’s interface and shareability features, so I figured it’s time to experiment outside of WordPress and just use this domain as “Pattern Pulp Lite” or “Pattern Pulp on the Go”, if you will. Feel free to follow along, join the conversation, or post your own pics.
Thanks!
Shayna

Dwell‘s serving up a little pattern competition for all of you up and coming designers out there! Forwarded along by our good friend, Jaye Davis, it looks like Dwell and Lutron® are teaming up for a crowd-sourced experiment with the opportunity to win a nice deal of press and acclaim.
The Challenge: Create a pattern treatment that will seamlessly move with the treatment up and down, all the while maintaining fabric pleats. The Color Association of the USA
The Color Association of the US was founded in 1915 and has evolved into an extraordinarily valuable resource for anyone working with color (and long production timelines). Twice yearly, color professionals spanning nearly every industry join forces to forecast color decisions in the realm of brand identity, product, service, communications and spatial environments. Yesterday I had the absolute pleasure of joining the team as a guest presenter and I can say without a doubt, it was an educational treat to meet the others, compare notes and nail down palettes. Thanks guys!
Service: Pattern People
It’s hard not to appreciate other sites, services and artists that embrace repetition. Pattern People, a surface design studio founded by designers, Claudia Brown and Jessie Whipple Vickery does just that. Based in Portland, Oregon and London, the creative duo make designs using paint, ink, graphite, and pixels for a range of projects and products – from wrap-around residential murals to perfume and chocolate packaging. The patterns on their site are refreshing, vivid and youthful and range from commercial to experimental.
We’re excited to announce that they’ve just introduced a feature geared towards the DIY design crowd that lets users download free prints. These patterns can be recolored, customized, and rescaled for personal use. The prints include a range of styles from ikat interpretations to florals, conversationals and more. Check out their
Artist Profile: April Tosch
How many people have what it takes to transition their hobby into a successful business? We’ve been covering entrepreneurs as of late, so its only appropriate to mention April Tosch, owner of Ann Meredith in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Tosh creates one of a kind prints for clients ranging from Royalty to corporate. Tosch’s digital library now holds over 80,000 images, all of which cater to the region. The themes are a hodgepodge of landscape and portraiture to romance and caligraphy. Each piece is usually embroidered or beaded before it’s presented to the client.
Since launching her business, the demand for customizable fabrics has sky rocketed in Jeddah, spurring Tosch to expand her services. She now offers photoshop classes for women and teaches them how to print personal patterns on silk for abaya sleeves. Creating a business model that is both profitable [...]
