Interview: Flavio Melchiorre

“All that I see stays in my mind waiting to be unearthed during the creative process,” explains Italian artist, Flavio Melchiorre. When you get lost in Melchiorre’s mesmerizing patterns you certainly see what he means. His colorful designs draw from all elements of everyday life, particularly street art.  Seeing his bold designs, you can easily imagine him walking by a splash of graffiti and filing it in his mind for years before it manifests into works such as Tips’ n Trips, Wild Things, or his recent iPhone skin for Grove. Interview: Karina Correa

Karina Correa and I met four years ago when she was the Art Director at Ecko Red, leading up the graphics division for women’s apparel. Since those days, Correa has gone on to merge street trends with commercially salable designs for a whole array of creative arenas. In addition to several graphic design print projects, Correa’s successfully pursued an animation and film career, directing and producing David Byrne’s Forro in the Dark music video as well as her most recent passion project, Train of Freedom. Rayamajhi is originally from Kathmandu, Nepal and is currently living between New York and Philadelphia as she builds her portfolio and determines her next creative moves. Not long ago, Bill Gentle shot a striking series of Rayamajhi for his infamous photography blog, Backyard Bill. Interview: Lucila Iotti

Sexy, unexpected, and attention getting. It’s everything you could want in a high heel, and it’s everything that Lucila Iotti delivers. Iotti started the eponymous label in her hometown of Buenos Aires where her father, Jorge Iotti, began his tailoring shop in 1920. In a city obsessed with shoes, her creations stand out with their eye-popping colors and mix of unexpected textures, including vinyl, patent leather, suede and leather. It’s certainly no surprise that her bold designs caught the attention of Patricia Field, Sex and the City’s infamous costume designer. We love Iotti’s latest collection, inspired by Brazil’s Carnival, and can’t wait to see what this innovator comes up with next. Risa (laughter), beso (kiss), and cuerpo (body) are just a sampling of the delightful Spanish words that Andrea Cavagnaro, Buenos Aires based artist, depicts in her eye-catching felt sculptures. We can’t help but be reminded of Jen Stark’s paper sculptures profiled here, when we see Cavagnaro’s brightly colored and lush layered felt. In addition to these colorful wall hangings, Cavagnaro creates large-scale environmental art displayed throughout Argentina.
