New York: Hacking Design + Sustainability

We’ve all been hearing about design’s relation to sustainability and the impact it will have on society moving forward. Over the past five years, Chris Hacker, Chief Design Officer of Johnson & Johnson, has been updating the corporate design process and has formulated a 120 person think tank focused solely on environmentally-conscious decision making. Prior to joining the Johnson & Johnson team, Hacker spent 5 years implementing similar goals at Aveda. Clearly a doer, Hacker says, “I grew up a hippie…I can’t stay on the sidelines and not get involved. As an activist for the cause of environmental sustainability, I believe that if I don’t come to big companies and try to help them become better, then it’s hard to complain.” Hacker and several members of his Johnson & Johnson team will be presenting their efforts in imaginative application of sustainable design thinking, their successes and failures, and the many comprises that they faced on the way to sustainability. This illustrated talk will explain their approach to sustainability in both design and business, illuminating Hacker’s ultimate mission: to change the way designers think about sustainability.
